Comet’s Trail Belles After Round One

The Saint Mary’s golf team dominated round one of the MIAA National Championship qualifier last weekend, finishing with all five scorers in the top eight, and topping defending MIAA champs Olivet by 13 strokes. Two more rounds will follow, and the team with the lowest combined score after all three will earn the MIAA’s automatic berth to the NCAA div. III women’s golf national championships.

“Right now we are feeling very confident,” said head coach Mark Hamilton. “They performed like I knew they could, and we saw that we can play at crucial points under a lot of pressure.”

Saint Mary’s Golf Tee’s off Thursday

The Saint Mary’s Golf Team, who finished second in the fall season, open the MIAA NCAA qualifying schedule this Thursday April 9th at the Blackthorne Golf Course in South Bend.

“Since it’s a home match, we should have the advantage we need over Olivet,” coach Mark Hamilton said. “Everyone is coming into great form right now, and combined with our familiarity with the course we are very confident for this tournament.”

The pair of losses also snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Belles and dropped the Belles to fourth in the MIAA.

“We came out real flat in the first four innings,” head coach Erin Sullivan said. “We were just a little intimidated, weren’t really playing our game, so it kind of took us out of it right away.”
