Irish vs. Ohio State, Take Two

The Irish continue their CCHA-opening series against Ohio State with their second game of the weekend in the Joyce Center. Notre Dame prevailed last night 3-1 behind the stellar goaltending of freshman Mike Johnson. Junior Calle Ridderwall, senior Dan Kissel, and sophomore Billy Maday provided the scoring. I’ll try to give updates from the press box at least after each period, if not a bit more frequently.

Bemidji advances to D.C. — good for them

I was taught at a young age, from the time I started playing travel baseball at age nine, that if you get knocked out of a tournament, you should root for the team that sent you home to keep on winning.

And as much as many Irish fans probably hate Bemidji State for prematurely ending Notre Dame’s season Saturday night, I have to say I’m hoping the Beavers make a run at this thing.

Thoughts on a ‘shocking’ finish

Two teams scored game-tying goals with less than a second to play in regulation to force overtime this weekend, but in some ways, Notre Dame’s 5-1 loss to Bemidji State nine hours ago — a game that seemed almost out of reach for the Irish after the Beavers scored a fluky goal two minutes in — was the most shocking of all.

Irish to play Bemidji State in Grand Rapids

The NCAA bracket was announced this morning, and Notre Dame – who earned the No. 2 overall seed – will be taking on CHA Champion Bemidji State in the first round Saturday in Grand Rapids, Mich. Should the Irish win, they would face either Cornell or Northeastern in the second round Sunday.

Elsewhere in the tournament, No. 1 overall seed Boston University will play Ohio State and North Dakota will face New Hampshire in the Manchester bracket. In the Minneapolis region, Denver will play Miami, who fell to a 4-seed, and Princeton will play red-hot Minnesota-Duluth. Finally, the team Notre Dame defeated in the CCHA Championship, Michigan, will be the top seed in the Bridgeport bracket, taking on Air Force. The Wolverines would face the winner of Yale vs. Vermont in the second round.
