Irish win in NCAA regional

No. 25 Notre Dame defeated Cleveland State 3-1 in the opening round of an NCAA regional in Ann Arbor Friday.

Sophomore pitcher Jody Valdivia picked up the win, her first in an NCAA tournament game. She pitched three innings in relief of senior pitcher Brittany Bargar, who left the game after a rain delay.

Game canceled against NU

Tuesday’s game against Northwestern was canceled due to rain and will not be rescheduled.

If the rain subsides, the Irish will play a doubleheader Wednesday against North Dakota State. The first game starts at 3:30 and the second will follow immediately afterward.

Your valiant reporter trekked down to Melissa Cook Stadium today to find the IUPUI Jaguars’ softball players packing their bags for the trip back to Indianapolis. The baseball game against Michigan State was also rained out.

Both teams have previously scheduled home games set for tomorrow, so check back for live updates of all the action.

In other news, softball’s senior outfielder Beth Northway was named Big East player of the week Monday for her .562 batting average in Notre Dame’s past six games, all wins.

Softball rained out

The Irish traveled to North Carolina for the first time in program history, but they have yet to play there.

All three of the softball team’s scheduled games at the Wolfpack Invational at NC State were rained out last weekend.

The team will be back in action against Texas Tech Friday at the UNLV Invitational.
