Irish face Golden Bears in NCAA semifinals

UPDATE: The Irish season ended today as the team lost to Cal 4-2 in the NCAA semifinals.

Notre Dame won the doubles point to gain a 1-0 lead before Cal won four quick singles points. The only Notre Dame player to win in singles before the match was clinched was freshman Kristy Frilling, rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

Twice as nice: Irish claim Big East title

For the second consecutive year, the Notre Dame women’s tennis team will return from Tampa, Fla. with the sense of a mission accomplished.

After coasting into the finals with victories over Pittsburgh and Rutgers, the Irish had their way with DePaul winning 4-2 and staking their claim to back-to-back Big East championships.

Live from the Eck: Updates from a top-five showdown

I’m here at Notre Dame’s Eck Tennis Pavilion where the match has been forced inside due to weather. For the second time this season, the Irish and the Bears will face off, but this time with a little less on the line.  The Irish claimed a 4-3 victory over the Bears earlier this season in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Indoor championships in Madison, Wisc.

FINAL UPDATE: BAYLOR 5, ND 2. Krisik finishes off her opponent, 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6), and Frilling falls in a very close match, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4.

Irish poised for deep postseason run

The women’s tennis squad might be one of Notre Dame’s only teams to be overachieving this season and they are doing so in stunning fashion. They have piled up seven top-25 wins, including wins over No. 4 Baylor, No. 7 Duke and No. 11 Stanford, on their way to an impressive 16-2 record.

Not bad for a team who began the season ranked 17th.

Tennis loses in Semifinals

Just a quick update: the Fighting Irish Women’s Tennis team beat #5 Stanford 4-3 on Friday, and then beat #4 Baylor 4-3 on Saturday, setting up a match with #1 Northwestern on Sunday in the National Semifinals.  As soon as I track down the results, I’ll try to put a word of them up on here.

UPDATE: Notre Dame fell 4-1 to No. 1 Northwestern.  Great indoor season ladies!
